MindsEye Team Faces Major Layoffs Following Disastrous Game Launch
According to a new report by IGN USA, the development team of Build A Rocket Boy has initiated a “redundancy” layoff process amid the disastrous launch of MindsEye.
An anonymous source has stated that it is still unclear how many employees will be laid off. What is certain is that the 45-day consultation period began today, June 23. According to UK law, this procedure is triggered when a company proposes 100 or more redundancies within a 90-day period.
It is known that Build A Rocket Boy has around 300 employees in the UK and another 200 abroad.
Effects on MindsEye
The development team is understandably going through a tough time as they figure out who will be laid off. This is also impacting the video game, as MindsEye was supposed to receive a series of post-launch content, including a multiplayer mode. However, with staff reductions, it remains to be seen whether the company will be able to fulfill these promises.
MindsEye was launched with several technical issues and has also been criticized for its poor gaming quality. The team has promised fixes, but it is possible that even with these updates, the game may remain of low quality and fail to attract new players. With a peak of about 3,300 concurrent users on Steam, the action game does not have a significant player base.
Future Focus and Sustainability
According to an internal email reviewed by IGN USA, written by co-CEO Mark Gerhard, the team remains focused on MindsEye but aims for a sustainable post-launch phase. It should also be noted that MindsEye players have been allegedly using bots to praise the game, though the team denies this, claiming that the positive feedback comes from sincere fans.
