Philips GamePix 900 4K@60 HD@240 Gaming Projector Review

How Much Does it Cost?

At the time of writing, the Philips GamePix 900 is priced at £819 in the UK, wiith a pre-order early adopter price of just… FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY FIVE POUNDS!? WHAT! £495.. just to put this into perspective, I wrote this review possitively thinking it cost £999 and had to update this part when I saw the price. This puts it in a competitive position within the gaming projector market, especially considering its impressive specifications. It’s certainly a more accessible price point than many high-end 4K projectors, and the focus on gaming features helps to justify the cost for its target audience. While not an impulse purchase, the GamePix 900 offers a compelling blend of big-screen immersion and gaming responsiveness for under a grand.

You can order one from Philips here, and at this price, you would be mad not to!

Brightness

The brightness of the GamePix 900 is genuinely impressive, especially for an LED projector in this price range. In my light-controlled room in the day time, the image was vibrant and easily viewable even with some ambient light creeping in. While it might struggle in very brightly lit environments, which is true for most any projector given the screens reflect all light, for typical living rooms or dedicated gaming spaces, the brightness is more than adequate. It certainly surpassed my expectations and delivered a punchy image that made games and video content pop.

Colour

Colour reproduction on the GamePix 900 is also a strong point. Out of the box, the colours were good, but switching to the “warm” colour temperature setting made a noticeable improvement, providing a more accurate and pleasing image. The projector handles HDR content well, delivering rich and dynamic colours that enhance the visual experience, whether you’re gaming or watching a movie.

Gaming

This is where the GamePix 900 truly shines. The low input lag, particularly at 120Hz and 240Hz, makes a significant difference in fast-paced games. The responsiveness felt excellent, and it was a noticeable upgrade from my older projector. While the resolution drops to Full HD at higher refresh rates, the smoothness and reduced latency offer a competitive edge. The option to switch to 4K at 60Hz provides a fantastic balance of visual fidelity and responsiveness for many games. Big screen gaming on this projector is genuinely immersive and enjoyable.

4K and Full HD

The ability to project in both 4K resolution at 60Hz and Full HD at up to 240Hz provides excellent versatility. For visually stunning single-player games or movies, the 4K mode delivers incredible detail and clarity. For competitive gaming where reaction time is crucial, the high refresh rates in Full HD mode are a game-changer. Having both options available makes the GamePix 900 a well-rounded projector for various uses.

Refresh Rate and Latency

The standout feature of the GamePix 900 is undoubtedly its high refresh rate and low input latency. Achieving 120Hz at 4K and up to 240Hz at Full HD is a significant achievement for a projector in this class. The quoted 6ms latency at 240Hz and 8ms at 120Hz translates to a noticeably responsive gaming experience. This is a crucial factor that elevates the GamePix 900 above many other projectors on the market, finally making big-screen projection a viable option for serious gamers. The rated latency on my BenQ is 78ms, over 10x that of the Philips, so it’s great to see projectors making such advances.

Should I Buy One?

If you’re a gamer who dreams of playing on a massive screen without sacrificing responsiveness, then the Philips GamePix 900 is absolutely worth considering. It delivers on its promise of low input lag and high refresh rates, making it a joy to use for fast-paced games. The excellent brightness and colour reproduction also make it great for movies and other content.

While it lacks built-in smart apps, this is arguably a benefit as it keeps the focus on performance and reduces potential latency. Pairing it with a streaming device or console is a simple workaround. The manual zoom and focus are most welcome, and it’s nice to see this can be further adjusted digitally to ensure you can get setup in a wide range of spaces. Compared to my own older projector, the GamePix 900 is a significant upgrade in terms of gaming performance, running cooler, quieter, and using less power, and costing less too; the difference in response times is night and day.

Ultimately, the Philips GamePix 900 carves out a compelling niche as a dedicated gaming projector that doesn’t compromise on performance. If you’re looking to take your gaming to the next level with a truly immersive big-screen experience, this projector is a fantastic option and one I would happily recommend. In fact, I’m seriously considering replacing my own projector with one!
