Rockstar Games Announces Official Release Date for GTA 6: It’s Been Delayed

Rockstar Games has officially announced the new release date for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6): May 26, 2026. This is a delay compared to earlier plans, as the game was initially expected to be released during the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2026. So, there won’t be a fall or winter release anymore.

The most surprising part of the announcement was how it was made. Without much fanfare, the release date was revealed in a simple post on the official Rockstar Games website.

The full message reads: “Hi everyone, Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026. We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”

“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve. We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.”

No new trailers or images were shared with the announcement. Since there’s still a year to go before the game’s release, it’s unlikely that a new trailer will be released anytime soon.

What This Means for Other Game Developers

Many publishers and developers will be happy to know that this delay means the fall and winter months will now be “free” from the “threat” of GTA 6, which is known to dominate sales. Major AAA games (and even smaller ones) won’t want to compete with Rockstar’s title, so they can now plan their release schedules with more confidence.

Some people had feared that if GTA 6 was delayed, it could hurt other companies, with some potentially going out of business.
